Leaving the Luxuries Behind, Part 2 | 1 | 2 |
SEATTLE, USA — There are so many things that we'll be missing while we're away, it was simply too hard to put them all into one list. So here, for completeness, is the second half of our "top ten" things for which we'll no doubt be longing most frequently:
Jeans and T-shirts.
Preparing for this trip meant buying hundreds of dollars of clothes consisting solely of man-made, light-weight, quick-drying, "wicking" fabrics. This by itself is the subject of a whole other write-up — which Erin beat me to, in her soapbox article called Blue: Who Knew?).
But suffice to say, nothing we'll be wearing for the next 12-18 months will have the convenience, comfort, or familiar look of jeans and a t-shirt. This isn't to say we aren't thinking about taking jeans with us, as I hear a pair of Levi's can be more valuable than gold bullion in certain parts of the world.
A corollary to this item is laundry facilities. With only six or seven outfits, we'll be doing a lot of hand-washing in sinks, which means it'll be twice as important now when brushing my teeth to look before I spit.
Shoes.
In case it wasn't obvious, that's just Erin talking. I've already got more pairs of shoes for this trip (two) than I have living at home. Erin, somehow, managed to pare down her collection of dozens to just two pairs herself. She's assured me multiple times that she'll be buying more along the way, which is fine by me, cause she's the one who'll be carrying them.
Love has its limits, you know.
