Caves - Random Thoughts by Erin...   1 | 2 

Keith and I continued our cave exploring in Mexico. We read about a place where you can go Cenote (underground river) snorkeling with guide. The whole deal even includes a very bumpy ride through the jungle while standing in the back of an old converted truck/tractor.

The Cenote cave was beautiful. We climbed down a very steep metal ladder about 30 feet. The water is fresh and about 76 degrees (thank goodness for the wet suits since it felt like 60!). Keith and I really lucked out and we had the first 2 hours of the guided snorkel fest to ourselves! Our guide, Jesus, even through in a few Spanish lessons for free.

Snorkeling in a cave is a very strange experience. Your depth perception is really messed up under water so constantly have to watch your head, arms and legs. Some of the spaces are really tight, dodging stalactites and stalagmites with trying to remember to breathe through your snorkel. The whole time Jesus is telling us to "watch your head" or "watch your knees". I actually started to get jealous of the SCUBA divers. They get to take a totally different route (obviously being equipped for that sort of thing).

Anyway, I never thought I would enjoy exploring caves as much as I have in the last week. Caves are truly amazing places.
