One Last Look — Barely after sunrise, not a whisper of wind nor the faintest trace of human activity — besides the transfer bus waiting to take us to Punta Arenas — makes for a beautifully serene moment, as we look back across Lago Sarmiento one last time at the Towers of Pain...er, I mean Blue.
Punta Arenas — After driving nearly three hours from the park to Puerto Natales, it's another three hours to the port city of Punta Arenas. Though it's home to more than 100,000 people, we hardly saw more than a handful during our brief stay, and couldn't help but wonder why, at first.
Colonial Touch — An old bank sits on a corner among several old stone buildings. Overall, it contributes to the town's colonial charm, reminiscent of the European settlers that founded it.
Casa Braun Museum — Former mansion to the Braun family, who settled the area and made their wealth from mining. Today, it's a museum featuring artifacts from the early 20th century, and all kinds of information on the settlement of the region. (Fascinating though it was, my favorite part was skidding along the hardwood floors on the little sock booties they made us wear.)
Quick, Hide! — As we walk by the port, we discover the reason for the town's silence: the cruise ship is here. Undoubtedly, all the locals went into hiding to avoid hearing the big, obnoxious Americans. Well, we've seen enough, too.
